BL-OG: Dual Action Control

BL-OG is a technique that combines the features of two natural phenomena to fuse a chemical light source (bioluminescence) with a molecular light sensor (opsin) to control a cellular component such as an ion channel. A small molecule luciferin is broken down by a luciferase tethered to an optogenetic element. The bioluminescent light produced during this chemical reaction is sensed by the opsin in the optogenetic element, triggering a change e.g. opening a channel. This combination of chemo- and optogenetic tools allows for the control of neurons and even behavior on a variety of time scales. The optogenetic portion remains functional and can be operated with traditional optogenetic methods. To learn more, visit the Bioluminescence Hub. Think this tool could work with your research?
